A fateful decision made in 1960s China reverberates in the present, where a group of scientists partner with a detective to confront an existential planetary threat.
Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.
During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, a young researcher considered a political dissident is employed in a secret military radio station, given her unique knowledge in astrophysics. Forty years later, an expert in nanomaterials, having found himself embroiled in national security issues, notices a mysterious countdown timer that keeps appearing to him in increasingly inexplicable ways. In his search for the truth, he will come across a virtual reality game called "Three Body".
